“You want a heroine. Someone to root for, to identify with. She can’t be perfect, though, because that’ll just make you feel bad about yourself. A flawed heroine, then. Someone who may break the rules to protect her family but doesn’t kill anyone unless it’s self-defense. Not murder, though, at least not the cold-blooded kind. That’s the first deal breaker..”
Thank you Berkley Publishing for gifting me an advanced copy of HE STARTED IT by Samantha Downing to read and review!
“Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven’t all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we’ll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.
But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.
It’s even harder when you’re all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory—a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won’t stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there’s a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.
But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.”
When you get together with family, you can always expect there to be some type of disagreement or drama. However, when you put a family together on an across the country road trip in search of an inheritance from their late grandfather, you know there will be some tense and crazy moments. However, it was more than just a few crazy moments, it was a whirlwind of heart-racing moments that kept my attention.
I was completely captivated by this book and all of the characters. Each sibling brought to the story an edge that I couldn’t quite decipher; I knew that they were each up to something but it was hard to put my finger on what their ulterior motives were as there seemed to be a twist in the storyline every few chapters. Samantha Downing knows how to keep a reader on the edge of their seat.
My only (teeny-tiny) complaint about HE STARTED IT was that I think the ending was a bit too far-fetched and rushed. The entire book was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and theories on what would happen when the siblings reached the final destination of their road trip and bam! the story was over. However, this doesn’t mean that I didn’t enjoy the book, I just was left wanting a bit more from a story that had kept me on the edge of my seat for 24 hours.
Samantha Downing is an immensely talented author and I can’t wait to read what she writes next. HE STARTED IT will be published July 28, 2002, and is available to pre-order now!
