“I think of my balloon, and how far it traveled across those inky waves. I think of the wife world out there and all its possibilities. Maybe one day I’ll see the northern lights. and Someday I’ll fall in love”
Thank you to Atria Books for gifting me a copy of DEAR EMMIE BLUE by Lia Louis.
“At sixteen, Emmie Blue stood in the fields of her school and released a red balloon into the sky. Attached was her name, her email address…and a secret she desperately wanted to be free of. Weeks later, on a beach in France, Lucas Moreau discovered the balloon and immediately emailed the attached address, sparking an intense friendship between the two teens.
Now, fourteen years later, Emmie is hiding the fact that she’s desperately in love with Lucas. She has pinned all her hopes on him and waits patiently for him to finally admit that she’s the one for him. So dedicated to her love for Lucas, Emmie has all but neglected her life outside of this relationship—she’s given up the search for her absentee father, no longer tries to build bridges with her distant mother, and lives as a lodger to an old lady she barely knows after being laid off from her job. And when Lucas tells Emmie he has a big question to ask her, she’s convinced this is the moment he’ll reveal his feelings for her. But nothing in life ever quite goes as planned, does it?”
I was completely enamored by this beautiful book! It was written with such poise and purpose that I never wanted Emmie Blue’s story to end. The story encapsulated the moments that life can throw at you in the most unexpected of ways.
I laughed out loud on multiple occasions; became overly frustrated at Lucas’ seemingly oblivious attitude towards Emmie; fell completely and irrevocably in love with Eliot, and then cried some very real tears during particularly heart-wrenching moments. It was just the book that I needed to read.
I highly recommend DEAR EMMIE BLUE to anyone who is looking for a book to transport you into its pages and leave you feeling as if you are leaving a dear friend behind as you finish the last chapter. For me, this book captured the essence of what it means to feel like you will never reach a point in life where your life feels settled but, in reality, that is what your life is doing. At some point in time, we all look back and realize that the things that we so desperately wanted actually happened.. but maybe not in the way that we always anticipated them too.
Thank you Lia Louis for writing this beautiful book and for allowing me to have the opportunity to read and review it before it’s released out into the world.
DEAR EMMIE BLUE will be published on July 14, 2020, and it is available for pre-order now!
