The Jane Austen Society

“Maybe reading Austen could give him the key.”

Thank you St Martin’s Press for gifting me a copy of THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY by Natalie Jenner.

“Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Chawton was the final home of Jane Austen, one of England’s finest novelists. Now it’s home to a few distant relatives and their diminishing estate. With the last bit of Austen’s legacy threatened, a group of disparate individuals come together to preserve both Jane Austen’s home and her legacy. These people—a laborer, a young widow, the local doctor, and a movie star, among others—could not be more different, and yet they are united in their love for the works and words of Austen. As each of them endures their own quiet struggle with loss and trauma, some from the recent war, others from more distant tragedies, they rally together to create the Jane Austen Society.”

It has been a minute since I’ve read anything from the historical fiction genre and it did not let me down; I ended up finishing the entire book in one day. I was completely charmed by all of the characters, the authors writing style, and how each chapter was laid out. It was beautiful!

My only complaint, and it is no one’s fault but my own, is that when the characters began references Jane Austen books and specific details pertaining to her stories that I became a bit lost. Honestly, if I had read any of Jane Austen’s work, I would probably have found this book to be even more magical than it was. If there is one thing that I did take away from this story, it’s that I must add Jane Austen to my reading list, and then I would love to re-read THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY.

I also listened to this book through LibroFM and it’s not often that I prefer listening to the audio version of something but I truly enjoyed the narrator of this book. His voice was easy to follow and relaxing — I felt completely relaxed while working in the garden and listening to Natalie Jenner’s writing.

I highly recommend this THE JANE AUSTEN SOCIETY to anyone who loves Jane Austen books or has ever been interested in reading a Jane Austen Book.

Sensitivity Warning: pregnancy loss
